Provenance is more than ownership proof
Ownership proof shows that a guitar was in your possession at a specific time. Provenance goes further: it describes where the instrument came from, how it changed, and why future buyers or heirs should trust the record.
Collectible instruments benefit from organized provenance: who owned them, what changed, and what paperwork survives.
What belongs in a provenance record
Condition history
Repairs, refinishes, part swaps, and anything else that changes originality or market interpretation.
Supporting evidence
Photographs, serial numbers, appraisals, invoices, letters, and old listings that tie the story together.
Why collectors should organize provenance before they need it
